Responsibilities: Responsible for employing a literature based approach for teaching reading skills and strategies, study skills and strategies, and literary analysis skills and strategies. Present a literacy oriented experience using Òreal worldÓ strategies to students based on psycholinguistic theory, neurolinguistic theory, sociolinguistic theory, metamemory, cognitive and metacognitive theory, metalinguistic theory, and affective reading theory. Base the literacy strand on the ontological theme, ÒWhat does it mean to be human,Ó and teach character analysis and theme analysis integrating personality and developmental themes of Freud, Adler, Maslow, and Jungian archetypal theory. Incorporate bibliotheapeutic principles in the selection of both classroom literature and personal recommendations for literature to individual students doing independent study. Apply reading-writing connection strategies for the assessment of reading, thinking, and learning ability, and initiate corrective or enrichment strategies when appropriate. Refer students to school Student Assistance Team for academic, psychosocial and / or behavioral assessment based on classroom observation and analysis of performance as it relates to standardized group ability and achievement testing. Through role modeling, generate an appreciation for life-long learning.

Responsibilities: Responsible for the coordination and articulation of curriculum and instruction in Grades 7 and 8. Plan and facilitate regular monthly department meetings in a collegial relationship with department members, school administration, and district administration. Research, plan and coordinate department in-service opportunities based on an awareness of the literature in the field concerning both theory and best practices. Mentor and encourage younger teachers, advise and empower experienced teachers, and solicit the experience and observations of senior teachers in establishing a collegial, independent, and creative department dedicated to providing a challenging, enjoyable cutting edge educational experience for the language arts students of Wilmette Junior High School. Promote curriculum and instruction articulation between the middle school and the junior high, and between the junior high and New Trier Township High School. Assist and advise the school principal in the hiring of new language arts teachers. Articulate across the school district at district wide meetings chaired by district administration, participate in the planning of district wide in-service, and assist in the implementation of district policy as it affects the Language Arts Department. Maintain awareness of professional and political issues developing in the community and with the board of education. Bring these issues to the department when it affects the department, and develop a plan of action with the department when appropriate. Promote attendance at local, regional, and national workshops, seminars, and conventions. Both give and encourage colleagues to make presentations to the department, the board of education, and the community concerning instructional strategies, curricular and instructional theory, and best practices.

Responsibilities: Initiated and developed the Developmental Reading and Writing program for Wilmette Junior High starting in 1978. Provided a psycholinguistically based language arts experience for students who were not having success in the regular reading and writing classrooms, and who did not have an IEP. Performed diagnostic screenings of students using standardized group intelligence and achievement testing data and a standardized group reading test. Used special education instructional techniques in a psycholinguistic context to aid students in developing individual educational coping strategies. Provided constant encouragement mixed with expectations for achievement. Developed studentsÕ sense of confidence, sets of independent reading and learning strategies, an enriched background knowledge, and an appropriate set of exit competencies based on performance and a diagnostic set of developmental hallmarks of reading and writing competence. When competencies were met, and the student was affective ready, sent the student back into his or her mainstreamed classes.

Responsibilities: Responsible for teaching multiple disciplines to an all female multicultural student community ranging from the age of 18-55. Prepared students to take the GED exam as part of their vocational training. Practiced flexibility and unconditional acceptance in a time before day dare, when younger unmarried mothers occasionally had to bring their young children and babies to school. Provided space and safety for them in the classroom while teaching.

United States Army Reserve

1970-1977

 

Responsibilities: Trained as an armor platoon leader at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Was offered the option of reserve duty when the Nixon administration cut back the troop deployments in Vietnam. Returned to active reserve status and served in multiple capacities. Commanded a transportation platoon in a transportation company. Developed and wrote war gaming scenarios and scripts, and tested army units in simulated combat headquarters training. Provided basic training support to basic training units in Missouri and Louisiana. Provided instruction and trained instructors in basic and advanced training units. Retired from reserves with the rank of captain.

Responsibilities: Responsible for meeting production quotas of aluminum foil cooking pan products in a multicultural production plant. Worked predominantly with Spanish speaking Honduran workers. Used limited Spanish speaking abilities from high school and college to communicate and to learn from workers.
